Schilling, Pettitte

For Yankess P Andy Pettitte, it's the Yankees or nothing for 2008. Pettitte has a $16M player option for 2008, but could net a multiyear deal on the open market. Andy went 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA last season. Very fews teams can say they have better offences on paper than the Bronx Bombers, so his win total could be misleading. If his ERA was under four, than you could say that he won more of those games. Still, Pettitte is as good as they come as FA options for 2008. Trade possibilities are Johan Santana, Dontrelle Willis, amoung others.

Coming off of another World Series is Boston P Curt Schilling. Schilling's career is coming to a close and he feels that he has another year left in him. He either wants to be with a contender, or a team with young pitchers to mentor. I'd say if Lowell is back than the BoSox are as good as a team if not better than any. I don't think that BoSox need Schilling, but he, like Pettitte is as good as they are going to get on the FA market. The Devil Rays fit the young pitcher section with Scotty Kazmir and James Shields leading that pack.

Both Pettitte and Schilling are one year risks for resonable amounts of money. I wouldn't want to give either multiyear deals, but a one year comitment makes sense.

Mets Exercise Alou's Option, Resign Easley, Interest in Posada

Second post. How exciting. From Roto World, the New York Mets have excercised OF Moises Alou's club option for 2008 worth $7.5M. There was a $1M buyout, so the deal was essentially a $6.5M question. Alou played very well in his first season with the Mets, considering he only played 87 and got 328 PA's as he battled through injuries, again. Alou hit .341 with 13 HR's and 49 RBI. Alou doesn't have the same speed or defence he had so he can't be counted on for that. If Alou can stay healthy and get over 130 games played and his PA total up to about 450, and maintain his line, than he will be a very nice pick-up. If not, than it won't make a huge difference to the Mets who have money to burn.

The Mets also resigned IF Damian Easley, but no terms have been announced. Probably one year and somewhere between $1-2M. Easley played a good 76 games in 2007, and it wouldn't be terrible to have him as the regular at 2B.

Like a few teams, the Mets need a catcher. Paul Lo Duca hasn't had any real contract talks, but the Mets will have some interest of other options fail. Number one catcher out there is Posada, and he won't come cheap. The Yankees have been linked to offering him a three year deal worth somewhere in the neighnourhood of $40M. $13M+ per season is pretty good for Posada. It's believed he can get four years and over $54M from a team as a FA.

The point is that the Mets have money to spend. Probably enough to sign A-Rod and Posada at a premium.
