Free Agent Profiles - Second Basemen

This year's class of free agent second basemen:

Luis Castillo - Unfortuneatly for him, there aren't many teams in need or a 2B this offseason. Castillo has hitting ability, but demonstrated very little power last season. Only 1 HR and 35 RBI to his credit. Castillo is more of a defence and speed guy. He'll probably get a a two or three year deal worth around $6M or so a year.

Marcus Giles - Giles is coming off of a very poor year in San Diego. Giles only hit .229 with 4 HR and 39 RBI in '07. Normally a player does better in a contract year, but not in this case I guess. Giles probably will get a small one year deal worth around $2M maybe, with some incentives.

Tadahito Iguchi - Same as I said for Castillo, it's too bad that not many teams need a 2B. Iguchi hit a respectable .267 with 9 HR and 43 RBI. Maybe it's not respectable for a superstar player. Iguchi will probably get a deal that's worth around the same as Castillo's.

Mark Loretta - Loretta is starting to get up there in age, and his play is showing that. Loretta only hit .274 with 4 HR and 41 RBI, which is far from his 2004 season with San Diego when he hit .335 with 16 HR and 76 RBI. Loretta will likely end up somewhere as a utility guy making a million bucks or so.

Kaz Matsui - Kaz has started a comeback from his injury days with the Mets, and the first part of this season with the Rockies. Matsui played in 103 games last season and hit .288 with 4 HR and 37 RBI. He did steal 32 bases though. Matsui has been offered a believed two year deal worth $6M from the Rockies. He can expect to get soemthing like from another team if he leaves the Rockies.

Jose Valentin - Is Valentin's name even worth mentioning? He is only a backup who might retire this winter. He was with the Mets last season.
